WPtouch

9th December, 2008

Since Jon and Dakota are busy playing something called Animal Crossing on Nintendo DS, I thought I’d  come follow up on the iPhone viewing feature I mentioned recently.

Clearly I love WordPress. It is the foundation of this blog. One of the great things about it is the plugins; the third party developed, click to install packages that add specific features to your site. Think of a function you would like to implement and chances are there’s already a plug-in that does it or, at the very least, one that provides a decent starting point for it.

The most recent example for me began with the desire for an alternative layout of the site, one that allowed the key content to be loaded quickly and cleanly for mobile viewing. WPtouch, a plug-in by Brave New Code, was the answer, and it is a very very cool answer indeed.

With only minutes required on the install, here’s the result.

The Josh icon resulting from adding teejaypee.com to the iPhone home screen. The custom icon is uploaded into the WPtouch icon pool to be managed by the plug-in.

From Bunnies To Calculators

9th November, 2008

Remember that thing I said about playing around with the web site while avoiding tougher jobs; well the sidebar, music and stuff page have just been tweaked. House cleaning and music…

maybe tomorrow.

Anyone tuning in from Australia with a spare minute, and if you’re reading this you have a spare minute, please head over to the Sports Performer of the Year website and put a vote in for Matthew Mitcham. It’s easy; just click this link http://sportsawards.smh.com.au/, then click on Matthew’s gold medal kissing mug, then complete and submit the form. Filling in votes for the other categories is optional I believe. If you can’t do it for Matthew, do it for me. If you can’t do it for me, do it for the chance to win $5,000.

The sun came out for a few days this week. It started out grey, raining and with my last trip to the Doctor, hopefully for another ten years. Not that the experience was awful. On the contrary, my Doctor here is a pocket-sized piece of angel cake. I’m just against visiting the Doctor unless it’s absolutely necessary, you know, like your arm falls off or your pee turns pink. It wasn’t either of those that got me in by the way. It was actually this: I’ve had a sporadic tingling sensation in my back for some time now. I had attributed it to a simple muscle injury from the big move, but after five months, one starts to consider causes that are not altogether simple. To further exacerbate concerns I discovered a small lump in the area from which the tingling sensation was emanating. Given the family history, we tend to take lumps seriously, so, against my strongest instinct, I went in to see a doctor here in SF (thank you Yelp for once again steering me towards superior service/supply). As it turns out, according to my Doctor, I had thrown some ribs out of place and the lump was the resultant knotted muscle. She stuck her knee in my back and, with an impressively loud crack, moved some bones around. So Monday was the last of three appointments of similar back cracking and manipulation, and I think I’m good now. I still feel the tingling, but the Doctor has recommended a few trips to the masseur to relieve the last of the muscle trauma, which is fantastic because I LOVE back massages and welcome an excuse to go. With any luck I’ll be back to 100% soon.

Bryan was over from NC visiting Dakota, so Jon and I met up with them on Sunday for Miette cupcakes and a pizza at Paxti’s. Apparently these pizzas (pictured right there ->) are “Chicago Style”; the crust is walled around the edge to form a bowl with the cheese at the bottom and a heap of pizza sauce and what-have-you on the top. They’re very good. We had already discovered them at Little Star down the road, but now we know to call them “Chicago”. Apparently. Right?

We went out to Chow on Monday night too, which is worth mentioning because ginger cake and pumpkin ice cream, that’s why.

There was the election mid-week of course, which I’ve posted about with few words but much emotion.

The fog and rain came back today, so I stayed in and worked on casting the new toys for the Brute and messed around with the web site, as mentioned above.

I meant to ramble more about this weekend, coffee and doughnuts tonight, but I’m running out of steam, so it can wait for later.

If it rains tomorrow I suppose I should get to that house cleaning and replying to emails. If it doesn’t rain, we might try and make it out to Alemany Flea Market to scrounge around for something worth bringing home. I’m sure you’re bound to hear about it either way.

Oh, Dakota got her revenge today. I suppose I could have looked worse with a mouth full of cupcake. Note the burger boys pic too. We had been talking about trying the much-hyped In ‘n’ Out burger for a while; but given the it’s-OK-I-guess food coupled with the poo-on-my-shoe experience (metaphorical, not actual) of Fisherman’s Wharf, we won’t be going back anytime soon. Not that we had expected to add a fast food chain to our regulars list when we have endless superior eateries on our doorstep. It was more about being able to say, “Oh yeah, I’ve tried that. Didn’t think much of it.” the next time someone mentions the place. To be fair though, maybe you actually need to have some meat in your burger to get the awesome In ‘n’ Out experience. It is, after all, what they are entirely about.

And if you’re wondering what the title “From Bunnies To Calculators” has to do with anything, well…
